Part One · How Infection Happens
Part One · How Infection Happens
Infection control is a system, not just extra hand washing. Once you understand the principle, every step makes sense instead of being a list to memorise.
1.1 The six links in the chain of infection
Infection only occurs when all six links connect. Break any one of them and it cannot happen. That is the logic behind everything we do.
Clinic example and how you break it |
|---|---|---|
Bacteria, viruses, fungi. Killed by sterilisation and disinfection. |
People, instruments, towels, sinks. Keep them clean and dry. |
Portal of exit | Portal of exit排出门户 | 血液、体液、飞沫;用防护屏障阻挡Blood, body fluids, droplets. Blocked by barriers. |
Hands, instruments, surfaces. Hand hygiene and instrument control are the core. |

1.2 Four types of pathogen
Relevance to beauty |
|---|---|---|
Folliculitis, impetigo, post-treatment infection. Pseudomonas thrives in damp equipment and water lines. |
The highest bloodborne risk, directly relevant to PMU, microneedling and PRP. |
Nail and skin fungal infection. Watch for it in nail and pedicure services. |
An absolute contraindication. Refer to a doctor. |
1.3 Bloodborne pathogens
(Standard Precautions)。Hepatitis B can survive in dried blood at room temperature for at least seven days and is far more infectious than HIV. This is why "I can't see any blood" does not mean safe. Treat every client as if bloodborne pathogens may be present — this principle is called Standard Precautions.
Part Two · Hand Hygiene
Part Two · Hand Hygiene
2.1 The five moments for hand hygiene
Why |
|---|---|---|
Before touching a client | 开始咨询或治疗前Before consultation or treatment | 保护客户不被你手上的菌感染Protects the client from organisms on your hands |
2. Before a clean or aseptic procedure | 微针、纹绣、注射、抽血前Before microneedling, PMU, injection or blood draw | 防止病原体进入穿刺部位Stops pathogens entering the puncture site |
After contact with blood or exudate, and after removing gloves | 保护你自己Protects you |
After touching a client | 治疗结束后At the end of treatment | 防止交叉传播到下一位客户Prevents carry-over to the next client |
After handling linen, equipment or waste | 环境表面同样带菌Surfaces carry organisms too |
2.2 Soap and water vs alcohol rub
Reason |
|---|---|---|
Soap and running water, at least 20 seconds | 酒精无法穿透有机物Alcohol cannot penetrate organic matter |
Alcohol-based rub containing about 70% alcohol | 更快、杀菌更彻底、对皮肤更温和Faster, more effective, and gentler on your skin |
| 接触过芽孢类病原After possible spore contact | 必须洗手Soap and water only | 酒精对芽孢无效Alcohol does not kill spores |
The seven steps cover palms, backs of hands, between fingers, backs of fingers, thumbs, fingertips and wrists. Keep nails short with no enhancements, and remove rings and bracelets before treating — these are the spots most often missed.
Part Three · Cleaning, Disinfection & Sterilisation
Part Three · Cleaning, Disinfection & Sterilisation
These three words get used interchangeably, but they are different levels. Using the wrong one is the same as doing nothing.
| 等级Level | 定义What it does | 适用Used for |
|---|---|---|
Physically removes soil and organic matter with detergent and water | 所有器械的第一步 —— 没有清洁,后面的消毒灭菌都无效The first step for everything. Without it, disinfection and sterilisation fail. |
Kills most micro-organisms but not bacterial spores | 接触完整皮肤的器械、工作台面、仪器手柄Items touching intact skin, benches, machine handpieces |
Kills all micro-organisms including spores | 任何会刺破皮肤或接触血液的器械Anything that penetrates skin or contacts blood |
3.1 The Spaulding classification
To decide which level an item needs, look at what it touches:
Critical — penetrates skin or enters sterile tissue, such as microneedling cartridges, PMU needles, blood collection needles: must be sterile or single-use
Semi-critical — contacts mucous membranes or broken skin, such as tweezers and comedone extractors: sterilise
Non-critical — touches intact skin only, such as spatulas, bowls and machine probes: clean then disinfect
(Autoclave)3.2 The autoclave
Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 温度与时间Temperature and time | 134°C 约 3 分钟,或 121°C 约 15 分钟134°C for about 3 minutes, or 121°C for about 15 minutes | 必须是饱和蒸汽,仅高温不够It must be saturated steam — dry heat alone is not equivalent |
Steam must reach every surface |
In every pack, and it must change colour | 只证明「经历了流程」,不证明灭菌成功Shows the pack went through a cycle, not that it is sterile |
The only true confirmation that sterilisation works |
Log every cycle and keep the log | 监管检查时会要求出示Inspectors will ask to see it |
Part Four · PPE, Sharps & Waste
Part Four · PPE, Sharps & Waste
4.1 Personal protective equipment
Gloves — new pair for every client, never reused, and never worn to touch door handles, phones or keyboards
Mask — required whenever droplets or aerosols are generated, such as laser, microdermabrasion or blood draw
Eye protection — for splash risk, and wavelength-specific goggles for laser
Apron or disposable gown — when there is a risk of fluid splash
Removal order matters: gloves, then eye protection, then gown, then mask, then wash your hands. Gloves are the dirtiest item, so they come off first.
4.2 Sharps safety
Use an Australian-standard yellow sharps container and replace it when about two-thirds full
Keep it within arm's reach and dispose immediately — never rest a sharp on the bench
Never recap a needle. Recapping is the single most common cause of needlestick injury.
Whoever uses the sharp disposes of it — never hand it to someone else
4.3 Waste segregation
Contents |
|---|---|---|
Packaging and uncontaminated disposables |
Swabs, gauze and gloves contaminated with blood or body fluid |
Needles, blades, ampoules, cartridges |
Part Five · Work Health & Safety
Part Five · Work Health & Safety
5.1 The hierarchy of control
Work from the most effective control downwards. Handing out masks is the last resort, not the first response.
Clinic example |
|---|---|---|
Retire an unsafe old machine |
Change to a less irritating cleaning product |
Change the environment or equipment | 安装排烟设备、可调节高度的治疗床Install fume extraction, use a height-adjustable bed |
Change how work is done | 轮换排班、标准操作流程、员工培训Rotate tasks, write procedures, train staff |
The last line of defence | 手套、口罩、护目镜Gloves, masks, eye protection |
5.2 Chemical safety
Keep a Safety Data Sheet for every chemical, accessible to staff at all times
Label every container clearly, including anything you decant
Store acids, peroxides and alcohol separately as directed and away from heat
Ventilate when working with irritant products
5.3 Ergonomics and your own health
Most therapist injuries come from repetition and posture — neck and shoulder strain, carpal tunnel, lower back pain. Set the bed height so you are not stooping, keep both feet flat when seated, move every hour, and leave a buffer between clients. Your hands are your livelihood; protecting them matters as much as protecting the client.
5.4 Regulation and records
In NSW, premises offering skin penetration services such as PMU, microneedling or piercing must notify the local council and are subject to public health inspection
Client records must include consultation, contraindication screening, informed consent and what was performed, and be kept for the required period
Sterilisation logs, incident records and the chemical register must be available on request
All staff must be trained in infection control, with training records retained
