Part One · Scope of Practice First
Part One · Scope of Practice First第一部分 · 先划清界限
This module starts with boundaries rather than content, because on the subject of nutrition what you must not do matters far more than what you know.

1.1 The Australian context
Dietitian is a protected title in Australia requiring accredited qualifications and registration. Nutritionist is not regulated in the same way.
Therapeutic claims — that something treats acne or a gut condition — fall under TGA and Australian Consumer Law
Overstated or misleading claims can be unlawful and will void your insurance cover
When unsure, frame it as information rather than advice: "research suggests" rather than "you should"
Part Two · Nutrition Basics
Part Two · Nutrition Basics
2.1 The five food groups
Vegetables and legumes — the wider the variety the better
Fruit
Grain foods, mostly wholegrain — cereals, bread, rice, pasta
Lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds and legumes
Milk, yoghurt, cheese or alternatives, mostly reduced fat
This is general guidance for adults, not a plan for one person. Your role is to point her to the public resource, not to tailor it for her.
2.2 What matters most for skin
Common food sources |
|---|---|---|
Supports cell function and skin water content. Marked dehydration shows as dullness and reduced elasticity. Water, soups, water-rich fruit and vegetables |
The raw material for collagen and keratin. Too little impairs repair and healing. Meat, fish, eggs, legumes, tofu, dairy |
Build the barrier lipids. Low intake is linked to dryness and flaking. Salmon, flaxseed, walnuts, avocado |
An essential cofactor in collagen synthesis and an antioxidant | 柑橘、猕猴桃、彩椒、西兰花Citrus, kiwifruit, capsicum, broccoli |
Involved in wound healing and sebum regulation | 牡蛎、瘦肉、南瓜籽、豆类Oysters, lean meat, pumpkin seeds, legumes |
Neutralise free radicals from UV and pollution | 浆果、深色蔬菜、绿茶Berries, dark vegetables, green tea |
2.3 Glycation and oxidative stress
Glycation is what happens when excess sugar in the blood binds to collagen, forming advanced glycation end products. Glycated collagen becomes stiff, loses its spring and cannot repair normally. It is the clearest evidence-based link between diet and skin ageing.
Oxidative stress comes from free radicals generated by UV, smoking, pollution and normal metabolism, damaging cell membranes and DNA. Antioxidants neutralise them, which is why vitamin C serum and sunscreen work best together.
Part Three · Lifestyle & Skin
Part Three · Lifestyle & Skin
How to frame it |
|---|---|---|
Chronic short sleep worsens dark circles, dullness and barrier function. You'll notice more from a course of treatment in the weeks you sleep well" |
Raised cortisol drives sebum, inflammation and acne, and slows healing | 「压力大的时候皮肤反应更明显,这很常见」"Skin often reacts more during stressful periods — that's very common" |
Constricts dermal vessels and directly degrades collagen and elastin. A leading driver of extrinsic ageing. State the fact plainly, without judgement |
Dehydrates and dilates facial vessels, worsening redness over time | 「治疗前一晚少喝一点,泛红会轻一些」"Going easy the night before tends to mean less redness" |
Boosts circulation and sweating, though not cleansing afterwards can trigger back and chest breakouts | 「运动后尽快清洁,对背部痘痘帮助很大」"Cleansing soon after training makes a real difference to body breakouts" |
Around 80% of visible ageing is UV driven | 每一次咨询都必须讲的一项The one item that belongs in every single consultation |
Part Four · Referral & Warning Signs
Part Four · Referral & Warning Signs
4.1 When to refer to a dietitian or doctor
The client asks for a specific eating plan, calorie figure or supplement dose
There is diabetes, thyroid disease, a gut condition, food allergy or intolerance
She is pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to be
There has been noticeable unplanned weight change
Ongoing fatigue, hair loss or slow healing that could be systemic
A skin problem worsens suddenly and unrelated to your treatment
Referring can be simple: that question is outside what I'm qualified to advise on, and a doctor or accredited dietitian will give you a much more accurate answer. Saying this does not make you look less professional — it shows you know exactly where your expertise ends.
4.2 Warning signs of disordered eating
Therapists work closely with the body and sometimes notice changes before family does. You are not the person who treats this — but you may be the person who makes seeking help feel possible.
Repeatedly raising weight, appearance or food with visible anxiety or self-criticism
Marked weight change alongside fatigue, feeling cold, hair loss or brittle nails
Extreme rules or fear around particular foods
Avoiding treatments that involve the body, or expressing strong disgust about it
Repeatedly asking you to comment on her body or weight
Part Five · Looking After Yourself
Part Five · Looking After Yourself
This section is about you, not the client. People leave this industry at a high rate, and it is usually not because their technique failed — it is because their body or their emotional reserves ran out.
5.1 Physical load
Prolonged standing, leaning forward and repetitive hand work are the three main sources of injury
Set bed and stool heights so you are neither stooping nor hunching your shoulders
Move every hour and do a few stretches in the opposite direction
Use forearm and heel of hand for deep work to spare your thumbs and wrists
Set a daily ceiling on hands-on hours and protect a real meal break
5.2 Emotional load and burnout
Clients open up on the treatment bed — about divorce, illness, grief, anxiety. You absorb a great deal without noticing. Psychology calls this compassion fatigue, and over time it shows up as numbness, irritability and losing interest in work you used to enjoy.
Listening is not the same as fixing. Your role is to be present, not to treat.
Take five minutes between clients without your phone — just breathe
Separate work time from personal time. Enquiries do not need answering the moment they arrive.
Talk to others in the industry regularly. The isolation in this work is badly underestimated.
Book treatments, take leave and see your own doctor. You are the most important piece of equipment in the clinic.
